Sadly many college degrees are not preparing you for the world of work and are just taking your money without assuming any of the consequences of their graduate's poor performance.
I remember reading that in Norway (in the 70s I think), the private sector helped create the school curriculum, and most students had internships at firms throughout their whole undergraduate studies. Consequently, people were always learning the trade from day 1, and they knew that what they learned would be useful afterward.
