I agree, emotions are detected in a probability range. The software tells us the likelihood of a face expressing a certain emotion.
Regarding the reliability of emotion detection through facial recognition software there's an interesting paper reviewing 8 commercially available software:

There's much work to be done to establish this technology as the gold standard. Only time will tell.
