I agree that nature of warfare has changed significantly over time. In pre-modern battles, hand-to-hand combat was more common, and the brutality of those encounters was astonishing to say the least.
I haven't looked that much into pre-modern days. I focused on times that created more distance between soldiers, thanks to tech, which allowed them to engage in warfare without the immediate emotional impact of close-range combat.
