I remember reading about a study that placed people in a room with no stimuli except for a button when pressed gave the person a brief electrical shock. People preferred feeling pain to being by themselves doing nothing.

An interesting article that clearly points out how brands work around those stagnant moments to ease the pain of waiting/doing nothing.
