It's a clever way to capture your audience's attention. Now, when I see a post like "29 things you didn't know about..." I immediately scroll down, 29 is too much!

But I like the structure it provides and as you said, the time I have to invest to read that article. It certainly helps to know that a big chunk of people's reading time is spent on articles in the form of listicles (I don't know why, but I keep imagining lipsticks with that word).
