It’s a tough question: do the words have an objective quality to them or is it all assigned by us? I would incline to look at it from a subjective perspective.

If we assign a positive vibe to what we listen to the outcome would be more positive. But it’s important to know the underlying feeling and where that comes from. For instance, if the lyrics say “kill them all” and you rejoice in that, even if it makes you feel better in the moment, you have to look where that joy comes from. If the positive interpretation comes from an underlying lack of empathy for others (or trying to feel superior), or any other unconscious compensation, then what you think is positive is actually rotting your psyche.

It may be like the distinction between pleasure and happiness. If you feel momentarily pleasure by listening to those lyrics, but without them (or similar stimuli) this positivity easily fades away, you’re just addressing pleasure and not happiness.

Does it make sense to you?

Look deeply and honestly to what is it that makes it feel good. Is it a momentarily feeling that fills another unsatisfied whole (e.g. feeling worthless), or is it genuinely making you feel better?

Thanks for taking the time to read and comment thecyrusj13!
