There's certainly a safety net in the corporate world that isn't available in the freelance/entrepreneurial world. But the corporate world can also stop paying (like the case of your father and to thousands of other people) or it can come with much delay (especially when it's split between the state and the company like here in Spain now).
I totally agree that it's about priorities. You can still pursue your passion after the 9-5 until you consolidate your other hustles into something that will allow you a full-time job.
I've also read that relying just on your 9-5 job is also a huge risk because it's only one source of income, and you can lose your job very fast, so you're left with nothing.
